Simples rules of geometry meant that 5-fold symmetry was impossible as were crystals without a periodic structure. This turns out to be wrong. Thanks to LastPass for sponsoring a portion of this video. Click here to start using LastPass: ve42.co/LPs
Huge thanks to Prof. Paul Steinhardt for the interview on this topic. Check out his book ‘The Second Kind of Impossible’
If you'd like to learn more about Penrose tilings, go check out "Penrose Tiles to Trapdoor Ciphers" by Martin Gardener, which helped my research for this video.
Filmed by Gene Nagata (Potato Jet on SVfrom)
Animations by Iván Tello and Jonny Hyman
Editing, Coloring, Music & Audio mastering by Jonny Hyman
Prague scenes filmed in 2012.
Special thanks to Raquel Nuno for helping with the tilings!

if it never repeats, by definition it isnt a pattern. misusing a word, and then saying wow, this thing amazingly fits my incorrect definition is essentially just click baiting

I have only a very basic and spotted understanding about general and special relativity, but it never stops astonishing me how Einstein was able to abstract its content theoretically, which over decades stepwise is confirmed.

This is really stupid, but, you know those tile shapes you play with as a kid, I made this pattern before using those. I didn't take it very far nor did it have anything to do with math, I just thought it looked pretty (the two smaller shapes together look like leaves or flower petals) and it fit so nicely and compactly. I was really weird to see this on the screen after watching this very interesting and science-y video.

Those are right triangles, sir. It's weird how SVfromrs keep getting this wrong. If you split a square diagonally, you get 2 Isosceles triangles, if you split a rhombus diagonally, then you get 2 isosceles triangles. I'm just chalking it up to mis-talked. It's the second time I've seen it though. The last video I watched, can't remember what about, someone made the opposite mistake. I wonder if they have the same writer lol.

I hate to open fire on a sponsor of this channel I love so much, but if LastPass belongs to LogMeIn, let it pass; they are THIEVES. One year, perhaps 2017, I signed up for a 100 dollars per year; next year, on 2018 my suscription was auto-renewed for 200 USD. By 2019 I was fully aware of what they were doing, and a few days before the subscription ended, I checked the new annual fee, and it had gone up to 300 USD, for exactly the same service of remote access for up to 2 devices. You bet I canceled my subscription before it auto-renewed again. Thieves. Again, I absolutely hate to do this to Veritasium, but LogMeIn stirs the worst in me. The service was good, the morals not so much.

Do one thing tell the person on Mars to send his time and blast Mars at the same time (Assuming it takes 20 mins for light to travel from earth to mars and instantaneous for light to travel from mars to earth ) Earth send message at 12 :10 Mars recieves at 12 :30 but the person thinks it is at 12 :20 and send a message that the time is 12:20 and instantaneously blast Mars Now if earth saw mars in real time earth will see Mars blast at 12 :30 and earth will also receive a message that it is 12: 20 and hence proved that the previous assumption was correct that it takes 20mins for the light to go to mars and instantaneously comes back to earth

There are only kites and darts? Well there are kites of 5. That make a somewhat circle. There are multiple kites. With 2 blues and 2 red and 1 green. These several kites looking at the green has a red to it's right. And a blue to its left. All that seems to be happening is the kites are rotating around. But I do see 2 kites where all 5 are in the same placement.
