How to Understand the Black Hole Image

We have just seen the first image of a black hole, the supermassive black hole in the galaxy M87 with a mass 6.5 billion times that of our sun. But what is that image really showing us?
This is an awesome paper on the topic by J.P. Luminet:

Using my every day intuition I wondered: will we see the "shadow" of the black hole even if we're looking edge on at the accretion disk? The answer is yes because the black hole warps space-time, so even if we wouldn't normally be able to see the back of the accretion disk, we can in this case because its light is bent up and over the black hole. Similarly we can see light from the bottom of the back of the accretion disk because it's bent under the bottom of the black hole. Plus there are additional images from light that does a half turn around the black hole leading to the inner rings.
What about the black hole "shadow" itself? Well initially I thought it can't be an image of the event horizon because it's so much bigger (2.6 times bigger). But if you trace back the rays, you find that for every point in the shadow, there is a corresponding ray that traces back to the event horizon. So in fact from our one observing location, we see all sides of the event horizon simultaneously! In fact infinitely many of these images, accounting for the virtually infinite number of times a photon can orbit the black hole before falling in. The edge of the shadow is due to the photon sphere - the radius at which light goes around in closed orbits. If a light ray coming in at an oblique angle just skims the photon sphere and then travels on to our telescopes, that is the closest 'impact parameter' possible, and it occurs at sqrt(27)/2*r_s

Something that is obsessing me with black holes and I still can't find explanation is how its collapsing may have a direction and why the accretion disk is actually a disk and not only an orbit level? Not sure if my question makes sense but how I understand and imagine a black hole is it is fed from any direction and should looks like a ball (just like in your video) becoming bigger and bigger with the singularity in its center. Could you give inputs about this? or may be you already made a video explaining it? Thanks

Wow, very interesting. Thank you for taking the time to make those props and explain all that is going on. There are so many non-intuitive things to think about and take into account. Question: how close could a modern craft with a rocket engine, let’s say a Saturn V rocket, if that’s still considered modern, get to a black hole and still have enough thrust to escape the gravitational pull? I know it depends on the size of the black hole. So I am not asking for in absolute terms such as 3/4 light years. Rather in Schwartz units. Or whatever they are called.

So the entire shadow is effectively an extended map of the entire event horizon due to the way the black hole bends space and therefore the path light takes. What would it look like if you were to do this using a globe of the earth instead of a purely black sphere, for reference to help understand how the light ends up in the various places on this shadow?

And we can observe their effects on the stars and other matter around them. Which can tell us their mass. And we can predict that such a massive object will cause gravitational redshift of stars as the hurtle around them. Which is what we see. And also predict that the orbits of those stars will precess, just like Mercury's orbit around the Sun. Which is what we see. To the best of my knowledge, there is nothing in the scientific literature that makes any alternative claims for what may be causing this. Only unscientific junk from crackpots on youtube. So yeah, black holes are a fact.

Because gravity isn't an actual physical force. Gravity is just space-time bending around massive objects. If you think of the universe as a flat plane and you place a planet on said plane, the plane would bend down where the planet is. Anything that goes into this bent space will fall towards the middle of the "hole." Black holes are so heavy that the dent it makes in space-time is extremely steep.

Are there any theories that question the assumption that the universe is expanding and that the farther away they are from each other, the faster they are moving apart? I understand the doppler effect tells us that if light is red shifted the object is moving away, but could something else like dark energy or some other unknown have an impact on how light travels great distances through space? Maybe as light passes through dark energy or enough space it just red shifts for some other reason, or can the wavelengths deteriorate on their own as they travel millions of light years? Could there be some other explanation for the red shifting of distant light sources aside from relative motion of the distant objects emitting the light? If an object billions of light years away from us had zero relative motion compared to our telescope, could something else red shift the light? Maybe the light wave just loses energy?

​@Ross that's also is included in my question.. why? some say gravity is not a force but space-time deformation, a 2d disc makes sense only in a space-time "projected" as 2d in our perceived 3d space hence the 2d disc (but this does NOT explain the different inclination angles bodies trapped in the "disk" have), some others say is a force/gravitons and in this case a BH mass would pull mass from all directions; in both, "centripetal" force does not play since there's no external "border" to be against and no pull "axis", pull would be spherically uniform
